MADISON, Wis. (4/15/15 UPDATED 11:55 A.M. EST)--Today is the deadline to file taxes, and CUNA is updating its Don't Tax My Credit Union social media campaign to make sure that policymakers know the amount of taxes that credit union members already pay--and the benefits all consumers receive because of the credit union not-for-profit tax status.
For instance, CUNA points out that 102 million credit union member-owners paid a total of $1.2 trillion in taxes in 2014.
With banks continuing to pursue an end to the not-for-profit tax status, CUNA is reiterating that doing so would be an additional tax on middle-class consumers. (See related story: CUNA 'Tax Day' ads define consumer benefits of CU tax status.)
CUNA provided sample social media messages for leagues, credit unions and members to use today such as "#CreditUnions don't exist to make profits for investors. That's why we're tax exempt." It is encouraging credit union stakeholders to customize sample tweets to reflect their personal message and statistics.
Using #DontTaxMyCU and #TaxDay2015 hashtags will amplify the message.
