HARRISBURG, Pa. (2/17/15)--The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association and credit unions will have an opportunity to showcase their state during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as last week Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman
Schultz named Philadelphia as the location to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention last week.
The convention is scheduled for the week of July 25, 2016 (Life is a Highway Feb. 12).
The event will mark the first major party convention Philadelphia has hosted since the Republican National Convention nominated George W. Bush there in 2000, and the first Democratic National Convention since Harry S. Truman was nominated there in 1948.
During the 2000 convention, PCUA, CUNA and credit unions collaborated on a community project and built homes for Habitat for Humanity in the city of Philadelphia, displaying credit unions' people helping people philosophy. This offers a great opportunity for Pennsylvania credit unions to shine once again.
"The selection of Philadelphia is very exciting for all Pennsylvanians, including our credit unions," said Patrick Conway, PCUA president/CEO. "We look forward to credit union staff, volunteers and members being visible to our country's Democratic leaders when they visit Philadelphia."
As a leave-behind project for the 2012 Democratic Convention in Charlotte, N.C., CUNA, the North Carolina Credit Union League, the South Carolina Credit Union League, the National Journal Group, CUNA Mutual Group, CO-OP Financial Services and others renovated a rooftop playground at Levine Children's Hospital to provide a stimulating and therapeutic environment for youngsters being treated there (News Now Sept. 3, 2012).
For the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., CUNA, the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions, the National Journal Group, CUNA Mutual Group and others sponsored the development of a new therapeutic playground at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. (News Now Aug. 30, 2012).
The 2016 Republican National Convention is scheduled for July 18-21 in Cleveland.
