FAIRFIELD, Ohio (4/13/15)--Members of Wright-Patt CU will be the first in the nation to use Android Wear smartwatches to check their account balances at the flick of their wrist, according to the Dayton Daily News (April 9).
The Fairfield, Ohio-based credit union also is planning an Apple Watch app with similar functionality, Tracy Fors, WPCU vice president, marketing and business development, told the newspaper.
The innovation was announced by Digital Insight, an NCR company, which has partnered with WPCU on online and mobile banking solutions since 2012. Digital Insight is a CUNA Strategic Services provider.
The smartwatch capabilities are included in the latest version of WPCU Home Banking's mobile app from the Google Play store. Members won't have to log in separately to use the service. During the first week of the new service, members checked balances via their smartwatches an average of three times, said Digital Insight.
The wearables market is expected to grow globally at an annual rate of 35% during the next five years. Industry experts said that by 2019, roughly 148 million units will be shipped annually. That compares with 33 million shipped this year, said the article.
