63 CU professionals earn CUNA ERM designation

June 10, 2015

MADISON, Wis. (6/10/15)--CUNA announced Tuesday that 63 credit union professionals earned the Credit Union Enterprise Risk Management Expert (CUERME) designation during CUNA Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Certification Institute in April.

With support from The Rochdale Group, the ERM institute provides attendees with an understanding of today’s risk environment. It also lays out processes for identifying and assessing all types of risk, while further offering techniques for defining risk appetite and using the ERM program as a strategic tool to improve performance.

“I appreciated not only the instruction, but the opportunity to role-play practical applications and talk about actual scenarios of implementing and sustaining an ERM program--and have some fun while we were at it,” said Mishel Kaufman, senior vice president of risk management at Redwood CU, Santa Rosa, Calif. “It was refreshing to be with other risk management professionals who speak my language.”

The next institute will be held Dec. 7-9 in Las Vegas. Topics include:

  • The fundamentals of risk management;
  • Common risk management traps;
  • The relationship between ERM and strategic planning;
  • The process of ERM integration with other risk functions; and
  • How to take ERM back to their credit unions.

“To drive your credit union’s vision forward, you need to be able to calculate and analyze when risk is an opportunity,” said Tony Ferris, managing partner at The Rochdale Group. “Incorporating enterprise risk management into your strategic planning process allows you to make more proactive and risk-informed decisions, improving the chances of meeting financial and operational goals.”

To date, 400 individuals have earned the CUERME designation.
