WASHINGTON (6/12/15)--The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), state tax administrators, payroll and tax financial product processors, and representatives of tax preparation and software firms have launched a collaborative effort to combat identity theft and tax refund fraud. Among the coalition’s goals: authenticating the taxpayer by using numerous new data elements; identifying fraud by sharing aggregated analytical information about the tax industry’s filings; establishing a formal refund fraud information sharing and assessment center to stop fraud schemes and reduce risk to taxpayers; aligning information technology infrastructure with the National Institute of Standards and Technology cybersecurity framework; and increasing awareness among taxpayers about the protection of sensitive personal, tax and financial data to prevent refund fraud and identity theft. “Taxpayers filing their tax returns next filing season should have a safer and more secure experience," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen ...
