CUNA featured in USDA's Rural Cooperatives magazine

July 31, 2015

WASHINGTON (7/31/15)--CUNA is featured in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s July-August edition of Rural Cooperatives.

CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle highlights how credit unions’ business principles, which are shared with other cooperative businesses, serve to make credit unions a different kind of player within the financial services industry

The issue highlights organizations that serve cooperatives, and CUNA’s page provides an overview of the organization, as well as the credit union cooperative, not-for-profit model.

However, he notes a common response from people when he asks if they are a member of a credit union, is “What is a credit union?”

“Credit unions are member-owned, member-directed, not-for-profit financial cooperatives that offer a wide range of banking services,” Nussle writes in the article aimed at a broad audience. “As not-for-profit cooperatives, they work to benefit their member-owners through lower interest charges on loans, lower or no fees for services, higher interest paid on savings and financial education.”

Nussle also explains CUNA’s operations, its advocacy priorities and how it accomplishes them through interaction with state leagues, its Member Activation Program and Credit Union Legislative Action Council, among others.

Nussle concludes by highlighting how credit unions’ business principles, which are shared with a number of other cooperative businesses, serve to make credit unions a different kind of player within the financial services industry.
