SACRAMENTO, Calif. (10/1/15)--The credit union movement has raised millions of dollars in relief funds to aid those affected by the rapacious wildfires that continue to blister large swaths of land in the West.

Taking up the call by Diana Dykstra, California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues president/CEO, for the credit union movement to chip in with funds for relief, CUNA Strategic Services contributed to the campaign with a $5,850 donation.

In total, the effort, which will benefit the Fire Family Foundation, has raised nearly $67,000.

Additionally, California-based credit unions have amassed more than $3 million through various efforts.

  • Mendo Lake CU, Ukiah, in partnership with North Coast Opportunities, a local community development nonprofit, has raised more than $375,000 for the Lake County Wildfire Relief Fund;
  • Redwood CU, Santa Rosa, together with the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, has raised $1.3 million for the Lake County Fire Victims Relief Fund, established by the credit union;
  • Patelco CU, Pleasanton, donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross to help provide aid to members, families and communities affected by the Valley and Butte wildfires; and
  • Golden 1 CU, Sacramento, held a telethon through which the credit union raised more than $1.3 million.
