TOLEDO, Ohio (10/15/15)--Toledo (Ohio) Urban FCU will receive a $100,000 grant from the Lucas County Board of Commissioners to help it serve Central Toledo residents (WTOL-19 Oct. 13). The commission approved the grant from its economic development department Tuesday to help “an area that was needing some financial  assistance and stability,” said County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak. The community development credit union will help many people in the area learn how to access banking, to strengthen their households financially and to “get loans that will make them successful in their endeavors moving forward.” Toledo Urban FCU’s groundbreaking was in May, and construction will be completed soon …

PONTIAC, Mich., and FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (10/15/15)--Two credit unions in Michigan and Missouri are changing names. Pontiac, Mich.-based Affinity Group CU changed its name Tuesday to Michigan Legacy CU (News Herald Oct. 13), and Mid Missouri CU, based in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., will change its name to Infuze CU, effective Jan. 1. Michigan Legacy CU President/CEO Carma Peters said its change “represents the strategic direction to bring the financial cooperative difference to our member/owners and our focus on making a difference in the communities we serve.” It has more than 21,000 members. On its website, Mid Missouri CU said, “Starting with our great legacy--61 years young and 26,000 members strong--we’ve infused, layered in, and added new products, services, people, security and technology” to fulfill the core mission: protecting the cooperative, serving the member and taking care of each other …

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., and ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (10/15/15)--Lake Michigan CU (LMCU), Grand Rapids, Mich., and St. Joseph, Mich.-based United FCU (UFCU) announced Wednesday that they intend to merge, in what they say would be the largest credit union merger in history, pending regulatory and other approvals. The merger would create one of the top 20 credit unions in terms of assets and loans, serve 500,000 members, have $6 billion in assets and have more than $8 billion in its mortgage servicing portfolio. It will have 1,400 employees in 78 locations in seven states. Sandy Jelinski, LMCU president/CEO, said the credit unions have similar cultures and complementary geographies and service strengths. Gary Easterling, UFCU president/CEO, said both credit unions’ board approved the merger unanimously. Jelinski will be president/CEO of the combined credit union. JEFFERSON, Mo. (10/15/15)--Kevin Brueseke, a former Missouri Credit Union Association executive, has been named president of Conservation Employees’ CU, effective Oct. 19. Current President Louie Delk will remain with the credit union for a short period to help in the transition. Brueseke has been part of the credit union movement for more than 30 years. He served as the association’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer before becoming a financial examiner for the Missouri Division of Credit Unions in 2012.
