CUNA Mutual’s #CUGiveBack equals $10K for foundation fit. lit. fairs

MADISON, Wis. (1/28/16)--CUNA Mutual Group’s #CUGiveBack fundraising campaign has paid off for teens across the country.

The campaign asked credit union personnel to share photos and videos of credit union holiday giving activities on social media, and each post generated fundraising dollars from CUNA Mutual.

From that effort, CUNA Mutual will donate $10,000 to the National Credit Union Foundation to support a national tour of 20 experiential learning fairs for teens.

The fairs will provide between 2,000 and 5,000 teens financial literacy and money management skills that will prepare them for saving for college and living within their means after graduation.

Individual credit unions and leagues will host the fairs, though dates and locations have yet to be released.

“We were inspired by all of the ways people give back to their local communities across the credit union movement,” said Robert Trunzo, CUNA Mutual Group president/CEO. “These fairs will make a difference. Teens will learn vital financial skills as they prepare for college and for life beyond it. At the same time, credit unions will benefit by making important new connections with young people.”

The fairs provide participants hands-on experiences in which students pick careers and starting salaries, and then prepare budget sheets that require them to live within their means while they pay for expenses such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing and food.

Following the activity, the students work with financial counselors to review their budgets and to discuss the importance of making healthy financial decisions.
