CUs celebrate Money Smart Week through April 30

Credit unions throughout the nation will help members improve their financial IQs as part of Money Smart Week, Saturday through April 30.

Created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.

More SmartMothan 500 events are scheduled across Michigan throughout Money Smart Week. For the second straight year, the Michigan Credit Union League sponsored books to be given to families as part of the Money Smart Kids Read initiative. The league donated 6,500 copies of the Berenstain Bears’ “Dollar$ and $en$e” book, which will be read to children at more than 200 libraries statewide.

Fox Communities CU, Appleton, Wis., is hosting events throughout Money Smart Week. Events include:

  • Money Smart Financial Makeover Challenge Awards, in which four local families will share their journeys from financial difficulty to financial freedom;
  • Save Money, Save the Planet and Live Well seminar with author and speaker Vicki Robin. Co-author of “Your Money or Your Life,” Robin has been called the “prophet of consumption downsizing” by The New York Times; and in Essentials of Sustainable Living, Robin talks about her latest book, “Blessing the Hands that Feed Us: Lessons from a 10-Mile Diet;” and
  • Interactive story time featuring “Start Saving, Henry.” Each child who registers and attends will receive a complimentary copy of the book.

Among the Money Smart Week events Community First CU, Appleton, Wis., is participating in is the Big Read for Kids, which provides an opportunity for parents to bring their children to hear a reading of the book “Bunny Money,” which focuses on the value of understanding financial matters. About 500 parents and children (typically ages 4-8) attend readings at local libraries. Each child in attendance will get a copy of the book to take home.

First Northern CU, Chicago, will host a crash course on understanding credit reports at three different times and branch locations throughout Money Smart Week.

NIU CU, Dekalb, Ill., is hosting a seminar on insurance services to celebrate the week.

Linn Area CU, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is offering a free shred day, a first-time homebuyer seminar and a credit score seminar.

Shrewsberry (Mass.) FCU will host a lecture series during Money Smart Week. Topics include paying for college, online banking, retirement planning and financial independence.
