CUs back primary candidates in Idaho, Pennsylvania

May 14, 2018

Credit unions are supporting candidates in competitive races in Idaho and Pennsylvania Tuesday, as primary elections take place in those states, as well as in Nebraska and Oregon. The candidates are primarily supported by state leagues and the Credit Union Legislative Action Council, CUNA’s political action committee.

In Idaho’s 1st Congressional District, CULAC and the Northwest Credit Union Association are supporting former State Sen. Russ Fulcher in an seven-way Republican primary.

The seat is vacant as incumbent Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) is running for governor.

Credit unions are also supporting three candidates in competitive Pennsylvania races:

  • 5th Congressional District – CULAC and the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association are supporting former state Secretary of Revenue Dan Meuser in the Republican primary. The district is new this year, and is currently represented by Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), who is seeking the Republican nomination for Senate;

  • 11th Congressional District: CULAC and PCUA are supporting incumbent Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) in the Republican primary in the new district, which is a slightly more Republican district than Smucker’s previous district. Smucker faces a challenge from his former 2016 primary opponent, gazebo businessman Chester Beiler; and

  • 14th Congressional District: CULAC and PCUA are supporting State Sen. Guy Reschenthaler in the bid to represent this largely new district in the Republican primary. It is mostly represented by Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.), who will be running for the 17th Congressional district seat in the state’s new district lines. Reschenthaler who has been a strong advocate for credit unions in the state Senate, is facing off against state Rep. Rick Saccone.
