Freeborn dispels myths about CU awareness initiative

CUNA’s Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union® initiative is an extraordinary opportunity for credit unions, Teresa Freeborn wrote in CU Insight Thursday. Freeborn, chair of CUNA’s awareness advisory group and president/CEO of Xceed Financial CU, El Segundo, Calif., addressed three of the biggest misconceptions about the campaign.

“The Awareness Initiative is aimed at dispelling myths that consumers have about credit unions. Although there are many credit unions that have jumped on board and embraced this program to its fullest, there are some that are holding back from participating due to a few myths,” she wrote.

Those myths are:

  • “This isn’t going to impact my credit union,” which Freeborn says is false, because the digital-first, consumer-centric campaign is meant to drive more Americans to credit unions, helping both the industry brand and individual credit unions;
  • “I already have a marketing plan, so I don’t need to participate.” Freeborn notes that the campaign is designed to seamlessly coexist with and elevate a credit union’s marketing agenda;
  • “I don’t know where financial contributions go.” Freeborn says credit unions will be able to work with CUNA and their state league to see the overall plan and provide feedback, and that though it is a national campaign, it is being built state by state.
