Northwest CUs lead the way in helping sick and injured kids

Christopher Turnis was not supposed to live more than just one hour after being born. Incredible doctors, nurses, research, and medical technology helped Christopher live through his diagnosis of posterior urethral valves (causes severe damage to kidneys and other organs). Today is he is a happy and active 13-year-old who enjoys basketball and video games.

In 2018, Northwest Credit Union Association and its member credit unions raised more than $2.5 million to help kids just like Christopher. Since 1996, credit unions across the country have raised more than $185 million through the Credit Unions for Kids program.

“Since the start of Credit Unions for Kids more than 23 years ago, credit unions support of our member hospitals, especially in the Northwest, has been critical in funding life-saving research, expansion of facilities, and charitable care, said Clark Sweat, chief revenue officer, CMN Hospitals. “Credit Unions in the Northwest have proven to be innovative and dedicated to ensuring all kids have access to the best healthcare available.”

Credit unions looking for new ways to engage members and employees need to look no further than Credit Unions for Kids. Research shows that 74% of people say that their job is more fulfilling when they are able to make a positive impact at work. And 55 percent of consumers would support a business again because they are asked to donate to support their communities.

To capitalize on these trends, CU4Kids is offering two new technologies this year:  

  • Give on the Go: A turnkey way for credit unions to ask their members to donate digitally. When a member logs into their home banking or mobile site, a banner ad or pop-up will prompt them to donate to their local CMN Hospital.
  • Employee Giving: This easy-to-implement program allows employees to donate to their local CMN Hospital through payroll deductions or one-time donations. This removes the hassle of having to manually submit funds.

In addition to helping kids in need, CU4Kids also offers a number of business benefits to participating credit unions such as:

  1. Member-facing materials that highlight the impact the credit union is making in the community by helping kids at their local children’s hospital
  2. Increased employee engagement
  3. Opportunity for Credit Union’s to unite collaboratively.
