CEO Update covers CUNA efforts to diversify Board of Directors
CUNA’s efforts to attract diverse candidates to serve on its Board of Directors was recently covered in CEO Update, a leading publication for executives. The article discusses the Board Recruitment Committee’s efforts to find and encourage candidates to run for a seat on CUNA’s board, and CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle’s goal of attracting a wider range of candidates than in years past.
“[Diversity] could be gender, race and culture, but it’s also age,” Nussle said. “It’s also the size of the institution that people run. It’s also background, so we not only have CEOs on our board but (credit union board) directors.”
The article notes that recruitment committees such as the one set up by CUNA are a possible solution for the lack of board diversity that can be present, especially in the non-profit arena.
The CUNA Board approved the creation of the Board Recruitment Committee in March to recruit candidates for Board seats in which the incumbent is not seeking re-election.
According to the Board, it considers diversity to encompasses all the characteristics, experiences and cultural influences that make each person unique. The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, inventiveness, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent plays a significant part in the strength of the CUNA Board.
