Virtual prom connects local teens

Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions denied high school seniors many memories this spring, but Democracy Federal Credit Union, Alexandria, Va., has done its part to create one special moment.

The $155 million asset credit union invited local high school students to a virtual prom to attend from home. Students who attend high schools within Democracy Federal’s field of membership could shop for a formal dress, don a fancy tux, and even take countless photos with Mom and Dad on the front lawn.

They were encouraged to share their prom photos and experiences via social media using #DFCUProm2020.

“This is something fun,” says President/CEO Ken Cahoon. “We’re excited about the outcome regardless of how many people participate. It’s an opportunity for students to connect with each other and share a memory that might have otherwise been lost to them.”

Plus, the virtual prom allows Democracy Federal to connect with students during the pandemic.

“One of our strategic goals is to reach our schools, but it’s been hard for us to focus on financial health for kids with the pandemic,” Cahoon says. “We wanted to get their attention by doing something positive and good for the community.”

The credit union hosted two proms for different schools on May 23 and May 30. A live DJ hosted the events.

Students could enter to win dinner delivery the night of the dance. They were encouraged to dress in prom formal wear and enjoy social distancing with their friends from their living rooms.

They also enjoyed the traditional crowning of each school’s prom king and queen.

Democracy Federal also supports local caregivers. It recently announced a COVID-19 Community Give Back Program through which the credit union supplied 1,200 medical masks to local hospitals and donated $1,500 to three local food banks.
