PODCAST: Inclusive leadership

Dr. Shirley Davis calls for ‘cultural humility’ in the workplace.

March 18, 2021

The nature of leadership is changing as cultural and demographic forces transform the workplace. To maximize the potential of their teams, leaders must create more inclusive environments that encourage the expression of different cultures, contexts, and perspectives.

In this episode of the CUNA News Podcast, global workforce expert Dr. Shirley Davis explores how leaders can foster inclusive work environments and create productive and rewarding team dynamics that reward top performers.

Today’s workplace calls for leaders to be not only culturally intelligent but culturally humble, says Davis. This requires an ability to listen and to begin to understand other perspectives.

With that understanding, employees will engage more deeply and are more likely to align their values to the organization’s meaning and purpose.

Culture is everyone’s responsibility, but it starts with an organization’s leaders. Davis suggests leaders start with “The Platinum Rule”: Don't treat everybody the way you want to be treated. Treat them the way they want to be treated.
