‘Speak up’ to move ahead

Let people know you want to grow, says Taylor Morris.

June 21, 2021

When I got my first job at a credit union, I thought I would be there a short time until I found something better. I was looking for a job that aligned with my values and allowed me to make a difference in the world.

Then I learned what being a credit union means and the difference credit unions make in their members’ lives. I was hooked.

I've been working at credit unions for almost five years, attended several Hike the Hill events, and crashed my state convention and the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

The credit union movement is the right professional fit for me because it aligns with my values, strives to help others, and provides excellent opportunities for young professionals.

The best career advice I’ve received is “speak up.” People aren't mind readers, so you have to be your own advocate for any needs or ideas you have.

What has been the most helpful in my career is being consistently reliable and letting people know I'm interested in career growth from the beginning.

If people know you’re looking for growth opportunities, they will be much more likely to recommend you for them.

TAYLOR MORRIS is assistant branch manager for Collins Community Credit Union in West Des Moines, Iowa.
