Virtual celebration for credit union pioneer

August 18, 2021

The Ohio Credit Union Foundation is hosting a virtual birthday celebration for the “mother of credit unions” Louise McCarren Herring at 2 p.m. CT Sept. 20.

Louise McCarren Herring was one of the original signers of the 1934 constitution that created the Credit Union National Association. She also founded the Ohio Credit Union League and helped start over 500 credit unions.

To help Ohioans celebrate, the Ohio Credit Union Foundation will be offering "party in a box" packages for groups from one person to sixty.

"The Ohio Credit Union Movement would not exist without the relentless drive and passion demonstrated by Mrs. Herring,” said Ohio Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Kimberly Connor. “On what would have been Louise's 112 birthday, we want to keep her legacy and passion for equal and fair access to quality financial services alive. We invite everyone to join us virtually to celebrate her remarkable achievements and life. In addition, funds raised for the event will continue the credit union philosophy of people helping people through Foundation grants and scholarships."
