Credit unions raise more than $180K for CMN Hospitals

September 12, 2021

Credit unions presented Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals with a check for $180,059 Sunday morning just before the 48th running of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run. Credit unions raised the funds through Credit Union Miracle Day, a nationwide effort to support the work of CMN Hospitals.

“Credit unions have been proud to partner with the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run for nearly two decades because of the great work they do supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “It might not be the time of year we’re used to, but the weather was beautiful, and it was wonderful to see thousands of runners out there on the streets of D.C. in support of a great cause.”

Nussle and Maryland/District of Columbia Credit Union Association President/CEO John Bratsakis, presented the check to CMN Hospitals the morning of the race. Credit unions have raised $10 million for CMN hospitals over the last 20 years.

Kenyan Edwin Kimutai was the first-place men’s finisher with a time of 45:45. Kimutai wasn’t even planning to run in the race, he withdrew after the Aug. 23 death of his wife, but contacted race leaders and was re-added to the pool.

Nell Rojas, of Boulder, Colo., was the first-place women’s finisher, with a time of 52:13.

Last year’s race did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but credit unions were able to donate $439,00 to CMN Hospitals, including $66,000 in donated entry fees from runners when the race was cancelled.
