Cuddy Outlines Ways to Harness the Power of Presence

Social Psychologist Amy Cuddy outlined techniques to harness the power of presence and perform with confidence today at the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).

Cuddy, who faced a life-changing car wreck while in college, shared her journey of recovery and growth, and how her evolving sense of personal power helped her to become present and own everyday spaces.

Noting the difference between personal and social power, Cuddy encouraged attendees to access their knowledge and personality to make their presence known to others, which in turn would demand attention.

“I would argue that if you feel personally powerful it would engage others around you to feel personally powerful,” she said.

The presence this creates in turn generates trust, which she called “the conduit of confidence.”

“It’s the medium through which ideas travel. When we feel personally powerful, we not only show up, but we show up as both strong and generous, as both confident and kind. Being powerful is about being both trustworthy and generous,” said Cuddy.
