National Youth Involvement Board changes name

NYIB becomes Credit Union Financial Education Network to reflect focus on all ages.

June 23, 2022

The National Youth Involvement Board (NYIB) is now called the Credit Union Financial Education Network (CUFEN).

CUFEN’s mission is to equip credit unions to provide financial education opportunities for consumers of all ages. The name change “comes as more and more credit unions offer financial education not only to students, but to adults as well,” according to the organization.

In the 1970s, NYIB focused on reducing the average age of credit union members by increasing membership for people under age 18. The focus expanded over time, and the organization officially added adult education to its mission in 2021.

“As the current chair for CUFEN and someone who has been involved in the credit union industry for over 28 years, I am proud to be involved with such a great group of credit union educators,” says Trysh Olson, CUFEN chair and education and youth programs manager at $7.2 billion asset Wings Financial Credit Union in Apple Valley, Minn. “This organization allows credit unions to network, collaborate, and be champions for financial education. After all, we are people helping people.”

Membership for CUFEN, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary at its annual conference in July, is free for all U.S. credit unions.
