39 credit union champions collect wins Tuesday

August 24, 2022

On Tuesday, thirty-nine credit union champions won their primary races in Florida and New York, as well as the special primary runoff election in Oklahoma. Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and state leagues have backed 320 credit union proponents this cycle with a 96% success rate.

In Oklahoma, CULAC and the Cornerstone League played an important role in the special primary runoff election supporting Rep. Markwayne Mullin who clinched the Republican nomination for the open Senate seat. Rep. Mullin will face former Rep. Kendra Horn in the general election in November.

In Florida, CULAC and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions supported 20 successful candidates, including:

  • State Senate President Aaron Bean, R-04, an 18-year legislator in the newly formed seat.

  • Former Secretary of State Laurel Lee, R-15, faced state Sen. Kelli Stargel and state Rep. Jackie Toledo in a competitive primary.

In New York, CULAC and the New York Credit Union Association backed 18 successful candidates, including:

  • Laura Gillen, Democrat, won the open seat in the 4th District after squaring off against three other candidates in the primary.

  • Incumbent Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-17, won against state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi.

CULAC is one of the five largest trade association PACs and among the most bipartisan PACs in the country. CULAC works with state leagues to identify, vet, and back congressional candidates who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.
