Nussle: Notary modernization would benefit consumers

September 1, 2022

It's time for Congress to make remote online notary (RON) a permanent option for homeowners and homebuyers nationwide, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle wrote in RealClearPolicy. Nussle signed onto an op-ed with other financial services leaders calling on Congress to enact remote online notary standards.

"The national framework established by this bill would complement existing state laws, allowing states the flexibility and freedom to implement their own RON standards, while at the same time ensuring consumer protections," the leaders wrote. "Beyond real estate transactions, notarizations are also required for other critical documents like powers of attorney and advance health care directives. Particularly for military personnel, RON is a game changer."

The CUNA-supported SECURE Notarization Act of 2021 passed the House in July.
