CUNA announces $2.5M in bipartisan campaign ads

October 4, 2022

CUNA announced Tuesday it will spend more than $2.5 million on advertisements in support of eight credit union champions for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, bringing its total spend for the 2022 midterm elections to $6.5 million.

The spending, by both CUNA and its federal political action committee, CULAC, follows more than $433,000 in campaign ads in the primaries. Additionally, CULAC, in coordination with CUNA’s state League partners, donated $3.6 million directly to 379 candidates for the House and Senate.

"CUNA is committed to ensuring that candidates who champion credit unions’ mission to enhance financial well-being for all, whether Democrat or Republican, can count on the credit union movement when it comes to winning close races,” said Trey Hawkins, Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Political Action. “Our ads are designed to educate voters on why these pro-credit union candidates deserve their support.”

Through its $2.5 million effort, CUNA and CULAC will soon launch a series of targeted political ads to influence voters in key federal races, supporting:

  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev.
  • Rep Don Bacon, R-Neb.
  • Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga.
  • Rep Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa
  • Rep. Annie Kuster, D-N.H.
  • Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va.
  • Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H.
  • Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif.

CUNA previously ran ads for Alabama Republican U.S. Senate candidate Katie Britt in her successful primary and runoff elections earlier this year.

CULAC is one of the five largest trade association PACs and among the most bipartisan PACs in the country. CULAC works with state leagues to identify, vet, and back congressional candidates who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.

"We are proud of our bipartisan track record of backing pro-credit union candidates in hundreds of races each cycle,” said Hawkins. “We look forward to celebrating with this year’s candidates on November 9th and to welcoming them to the 118th Congress in January.”

CULAC and state leagues supported 333 credit union candidates during the midterm primaries with a 96% success rate. To see all CULAC-supported candidates, visit cuna.org/elections.
