Credit Union National Association Backs Rep. Luria

Washington, D.C.

Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and its federal political action committee, CULAC, have committed a total of $2.5 million in campaign advertisements to help advance credit union supporters, including independent expenditure digital ads and mailers supporting retired naval commander Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA-2) in her competitive race.

“Congresswoman Luria has been a champion for Virginia consumers, especially when it comes to protecting financial privacy and ensuring families and businesses get the help they need to deal with rising costs.  We’re proud to support her in this race,” said Trey Hawkins, Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Political Action.

Rep. Luria has been a strong supporter of credit union priorities, including supporting the landmark field of membership bill that would allow federal charters to add underserved areas and fighting a proposal that would have required credit unions to report most consumers’ financial transactions to the IRS.

Through its $2.5 million effort, CUNA and CULAC are also looking to influence voters in other key federal races, including:

  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
  • Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE-2)
  • Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA-2)
  • Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA-2)
  • Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH-2)
  • Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH-1)
  • Rep. David Valadao (R-CA-22)

CUNA previously ran ads for Katie Britt (R-AL-SEN) in her successful primary and runoff elections earlier this year.

CULAC is one of the five largest trade association PACs and among the most bipartisan PACs in the country. CULAC works with state leagues to identify, vet, and back congressional candidates who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.

"We are proud of our bipartisan track record of backing pro-credit union candidates in hundreds of races each cycle,” said Hawkins. “We look forward to celebrating with this year’s candidates on November 9th and to welcoming them to the 118th Congress in January.”

CULAC and state leagues supported 333 credit union candidates during the midterm primaries with a 96% success rate. To see all CULAC-supported candidates, visit cuna.org/elections.
