CUNA supports Senate remote notary legislation

May 12, 2023

CUNA and dozens of organizations wrote Sens. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., and Mark Warner, D-Va., in support of their SECURE Notarization Act Friday, a bill to authorize the use of remote online notarization and create national standards and protections for its use. The House unanimously passed the bill in February.

“The SECURE Notarization Act provides businesses and consumers with the ability to execute critical documents using two-way audiovisual communication,” the letter reads. “Current requirements for a signer to physically be in the presence of a Notary are often impractical and sometimes impossible due to health reasons, as we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other barriers including military service or work travel.”

The organizations note 44 states have passed legislation allowing for remote online notary.
