Sen. Carper announces he will not seek re-election

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., announced Monday he will not seek re-election in 2024. Carper currently chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and has chaired the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee during his 22 years in the Senate.

“Credit unions were proud to work together with Sen. Carper on his Data Security Act, a much-needed solution to a problem that continues to harm consumers,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “We thank him for his work alongside credit unions to protect consumers and congratulate him on an impressive legacy of public service that includes terms in the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and as Delaware’s governor.”

Carper and his staff are always available to us, taking the time to engage with Delaware credit unions to fully understand our issues, and subsequently how he and others can be supportive,” said Cooperative Credit Union Association President/CEO Ron McLean. “Beyond credit union issues, in every interaction I have with Senator Carper, I walk away with a greater appreciation of his devotion to public service and for building a better Delaware and a better nation.  

“CCUA and Delaware credit unions look forward to working together with Senator Carper during the remainder of his time in office,” he added.

Carper introduced the Data Security Act to create a strong, national data security standard for entities that handle consumer information with then Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and also introduced the Cyber Threat Sharing Act to increase the sharing of data to help combat cyberattacks.

Carper visited Dover FCU in 2015 to discuss those bills.
