Listen: The perils of ‘pig slaughtering’

Crime can bilk consumers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

June 8, 2023

“Pig slaughtering” is a crime where perpetrators prey on people by forming relationships with them online and then bilking them out of their savings.

While many victims are vulnerable, lonely, and/or elderly, everyone is susceptible to this crime due to fraudsters’ sophisticated use of data and social engineering, says Giles Witherspoon-Boyd, lead auditor and lead implementor at Protocol.

He caught up with Credit Union Magazine Deputy Editor Bill Merrick Thursday at the 2023 CUNA Cybersecurity Conference with NASCUS. Witherspoon-Boyd explains security leaders’ role in thwarting this crime, the need for financial education, how robust benefits packages can ease people’s susceptibility, and more.
