WATCH: Giveback event supports Denver-area children

Conference attendees seek to alleviate food insecurity by packing bags for the Backpack Society.

October 5, 2023

A corner of the 2023 CUNA Operations & Member Experience Council and CUNA Technology Council Conference exhibit hall was filled with nonperishable foods, colorful drawstring bags, and people looking to help. By the end of the event's opening night, canned vegetables and soup, granola bars, and more were packed into 500 bags that will be distributed to Denver-area children.

The conference giveback event, organized by the councils, Fiserv, and $925 million asset Air Academy Credit Union in Colorado Springs, Colo., supported the Backpack Society, which helps alleviate food insecurity by providing food to kids on weekends and during breaks from school. Conference attendees came through, volunteering to pack and reaching the goal of 500 bags in about 45 minutes.

CUNA Associate Editor Brock Fritz caught up with Backpack Society founder/executive director June Everett, and packed a bag alongside Air Academy Marketing Coordinator Madison Vistuba.

Hear what Everett and Vistuba had to say about the event, the cause, and why giving back is important to the credit union movement.
