CUNA to Congress on ICU Day: CUs support communities every day

October 19, 2023

CUNA wrote to all members of Congress Thursday in recognition of the 75th International Credit Union Day, highlighting the many ways not-for-profit financial cooperatives help people and communities succeed.

“While we celebrate today’s 75th anniversary, our efforts as not-for-profit financial cooperatives to help people succeed financially is something we do every single day,” wrote CUNA Deputy Chief Advocacy Office for Federal Government Affairs Jason Stverak. “Data shows how the credit union difference improves the financial health of members and their communities. Credit union members saw nearly $20.3 billion in benefits between June 2022-June 2023, and non-members saw an additional $7.9 billion simply due to credit unions’ competitive presence.

“Banks are leaving communities behind while credit unions are stepping up to provide them with needed financial services. Yet another reason why credit unions are one of the most powerful pro-consumer forces in our country,” he added.

Stverak asked members of Congress to support credit unions’ “people helping people” commitment by:

  • Preserving the credit union tax status.
  • Protecting access to credit and opposing the Big Box Bill and any changes to interchange.
  • Right-sizing regulations.
  • Modernizing the Federal Credit Union Act.
