Sen. Manchin announces he will not seek re-election

November 9, 2023

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., announced Thursday he will not seek re-election. Manchin chairs the Senate Energy Committee and has served in the Senate since 2010.

“We thank Sen. Manchin for his support of many credit union priorities, including examination fairness, and co-sponsoring S. 2155, which was eventually enacted into law,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “His support for common-sense regulatory relief helped credit unions increase service to members and communities, and we wish him and his family the best going forward.”

“We thank Senator Manchin for his support for West Virginia credit union legislative priorities over the many years. Our Senior Senator has been a friend to credit unions, with a keen understanding of our local challenges, and our cooperative philosophy and structure," said West Virginia Credit Union League President/CEO Rich Schaffer. “We look forward to working with him in the coming year as he closes out a distinguished career in the U.S. Senate.”

Manchin was an original co-sponsor of S. 2155, the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act. He also sponsored bills in several Congresses to reform financial institution examination processes.

CUNA and the West Virginia Credit Union League supported Manchin in his last election with a partisan communication campaign.
