Mountain America CU Donates $250,000 to Aquarium

Funds will polarize the Living Planet Aquarium’s new Penguin Tank.

February 28, 2012

Against a backdrop of curious, happy children and swimming penguins, executives from Mountain America Credit Union handed over a $250,000 check to The Living Planet Aquarium founder/CEO, Brent Andersen.

The West Jordan, Utah-based credit union has sponsored the aquarium’s penguin exhibit and shark tank since 2004. This contribution will help build a new 90,000-gallon penguin habitat that’s 10 times larger than the current facility.

“We were honored to help give these penguins a home in 2010, and we feel very fortunate to now help build their new and bigger home,” says Sharon Cook, Mountain America’s senior vice president of marketing. “Our commitment to supporting enriching activities for our community remains steadfast, and the aquarium is a prime example of that.”

Last year, the aquarium hosted nearly 400,000 visitors.

The updated penguin habitat will be part of a new building that’s slated to open in the spring of 2013.

“Because The Living Planet Aquarium exists to engage the public in exploration, discovery, and learning, this is truly a gift to the community,” Andersen says. “Mountain America has helped us sustain our programs and services for many years and now has catalyzed our expansion and growth. We are incredibly appreciative.”
