CUs Fighting 'Once in a Generation' Battle Over Tax Status

CUNA Leaders stress the importance of the 'Don't Tax My Credit Union' fight.

Credit unions are in "once in a generation" battle with banks over the credit union tax status, CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney said Wednesday during a Town Hall meeting with CUNA employees in Madison, Wis.

Meetings with CU representatives in Australia on a recent trip reinforced the righteousness of the Don't Tax My Credit Union message, he says, because laws taxing Australian CUs have significantly changed the movement Down Under.

CUNA Chair Pat Wesenberg, president/CEO of Central City CU, Marshfield, Wis., urged CUNA employees to continue to spread the Don't Tax My CU message to legislators.

Credit unions are a force for good around the world,” says Steve Schaefer, manager of technical services for the World Council of Credit Unions. “We should all know that we’re part of a worldwide movement.”

There are now 56,000 credit unions serving 200 million people in 101 countries, he says.
