Social Media: Give Before You Ask

Three tips for building social media credibility.

August 14, 2014

Successful social media efforts depend on cultivating credibility in each of your social media outlets, social media expert Gary Vaynerchuk advises.

During a recent webinar, Vaynerchuck, CEO/co-founder of VaynerMedia, offered three key social media takeaways:

1. Give way more than you ask

Provide your followers value over and over again. The best people in social media give all the time. That allows them to ask when the time is right.

“You have to give before you ask,” he says.

2. Respect the room you're in

Don’t post the same messages, in the same way, on all of your social media accounts.

Context matters. Each platform is unique.

“Don't use social networks to distribute content; tell your stories within them," Vaynerchuk says.

3. Test and learn.

Experiment with different styles of messages.

Social media platforms are ever-changing. Audiences shift, so shift with them.

“There’s no line in the sand” for what you shouldn’t try, he says.
