World’s Biggest Shred-a-Thon
CU sets world record by collecting and shredding 422,350 pounds of paper.
San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) set a Guinness World Record in late July by collecting and shredding 422,350 pounds of paper from more than 7,000 people at its Super Shred Event at Qualcomm Stadium—the largest one-day paper pickup at a single location.
Since starting its free Shred Days in 2007 to promote proper disposal of confidential materials, the $6.3 billion asset credit union has collected, shredded, and recycled more than 1.1 million documents at no charge, saving more than 9,700 trees.
“I think the community in general is more aware of identity theft and notes the importance of securely destroying anything with their personal information on it,” says Nathan Schmidt, SDCCU’s executive vice president of marketing and business development. “We enjoy offering this service.”
