Ventura County CU CEO addresses Scottish parliament

October 9, 2014

EDINBURGH, Scotland (10/10/14)--The Scottish Parliament celebrated International Credit Union Day--set for Oct. 16--a week early, by hosting credit union executives from the United States to learn about how American credit unions have grown to better serve their communities.

The Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) hosted Joe Schroeder, president/CEO of Ventura (Calif.) County CU, with $677 million in assets, at a reception to speak about how U.S. credit unions operate and how they provide a full range of services to members of all backgrounds, all while retaining a community focus and their cooperative values.

The annual reception--hosted by John Wilson, deputy convener of the Scottish Parliament--was sponsored by CUNA Mutual Group and ABCUL.

Guests also heard from Wilson; Bobby Gould, CUNA Mutual key account manager; and Mark Lyonette, ABCUL chief executive.

"It was inspiring to meet Joe Schroeder and to hear how America's credit unions have achieved great success through collaboration and product innovation," said Frank McKillop, ABCUL Scotland policy manager. "Scotland's credit unions can learn a great deal from our international colleagues as we seek to do more to serve our communities."

Scotland's more than 100 credit unions serve about 355,000 members. Everyone in Scotland is eligible to become a credit union member, and an average of 550 people join a credit union each week.
