Hundreds of credit union leaders from 10 states met with elected officials and other policymakers throughout Washington, D.C. this week as part of their “Hike the Hill” visits. Credit unions and leagues from California, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin participated in this week’s visits
The credit union tax status was chief among topics discussed with legislators this week. Credit unions emphasized how, despite false banker attacks, the credit union mission and structure remains unchanged since its tax status was granted.
Other topics discussed include payment and data security, housing finance reform, combating elder financial abuse and regulatory relief.
More than 30 credit union young professionals prepared for the week’s activities with CUNA’s young professionals advocacy training.
Two young professionals, high schoolers that work for Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn. in a student branch, accompanied their credit union and the Minnesota Credit Union Network to Washington, D.C. The two attended several hill meetings, including one with Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.).
Activists had a very productive day in D.C. with the WI delegation as part of #HiketheHill. We were joined by @CUNA's Jim Nussle and had a chance to thank House Speaker Paul Ryan for his years of support for 3 million #creditunion members in WI and 110M members nationally. pic.twitter.com/dxWMiWqjcQ

A champion for Main Street, not Wall Street, @SenSherrodBrown, has a special place in his heart for #CreditUnions. Though we sometimes have differences on policy, we appreciate both he and his team for their candor and willingness to listen to our concerns. #AdvocacyInAction pic.twitter.com/nOSMlI0FSv

You will not find a stronger voice for credit unions in Congress than @RepTomEmmer. He and his staff are top notch and @mncreditunions can’t thank him enough for all he does. pic.twitter.com/moudxICbKY

@RepBeatty LOVES #CreditUnions as we helped her secure a loan when other financial institutions wouldn’t take the chance. She is an amazing CU champion who always LOVES our leave-behinds! #CommonSenseReg.#BetterTogether #AdvocacyInAction #LeagueForYou pic.twitter.com/SZ6IRSsrLy
