Washington, DC (November 7, 2018) – Credit unions are pleased to see their supported candidates being elected to the 116th Congress. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA), leagues, credit unions and members rallied together to protect candidates aligned with the issues facing Main Street institutions. With over 252,000 credit union members per congressional district, American’s credit unions held a significant stake in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), the federal PAC of CUNA, provided campaign support for 388 candidates up for election in the House and Senate. Contribution efforts were heavily focused around helping those who support the cooperative movement and make significant contributions to their community.
“Credit unions invested a record $7 million into this election to help continue the positive momentum we’ve seen for credit union priorities in Congress,” Nussle said. “We’re pleased that we’ll have many friendly faces in the next Congress, and we’ll be working hard from now until then to connect with new members and engage with returning members to advance credit union priorities.”
The trade association will release a white paper on Thursday that provides an in-depth analysis of credit union involvement in the election, what the results mean for credit unions in the next Congress and take a closer look at state-level elections.
CUNA advocacy will continue its momentum on several top industry priorities including data security, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Government-Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) reform. Credit unions look forward to educating new members of the 116th Congress on the cooperative nature of credit unions who provide unmatched services to families of diverse socioeconomic standing.
