CUNA backs Britt for Senate with six-figure communications push

May 9, 2022
Elections

CUNA is coordinating with League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU) on a six-figure targeted member communications campaign in support of Katie Britt for U.S. Senate.

Britt is a former chief of staff for retiring Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala, She is also the former the president/CEO of the Business Council of Alabama.

“As a proven leader in the Alabama business community, Katie Britt has a deep understanding of the role credit unions play in promoting financial well-being for all Alabamians,” said Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer for political action. “She has pledged to work with credit unions to cut burdensome regulations that limit these member-owned, not-for-profit financial institutions from doing more to advance local communities across the state.”

CUNA is running digital ads and sending mailers to over 150,000 credit union members who are registered Republicans ahead of the May 24 primary. LSCU endorsed Britt and Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), CUNA’s federal political action committee (PAC), contributed the maximum $5,000 for the primary election.

This is CUNA’s first political expenditure in the 2022 election cycle, outside of CULAC donations. CUNA and CULAC plan to launch additional member communications and independent expenditures this year.

CULAC is among the most bipartisan national PACs, with support going almost equally to credit union-friendly candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
