Credit unions from six states visit Capitol Hill for Spring meetings

June 16, 2022
Cap1

Advocates from all six states represented by the soon-to-be-merged Mountain West Credit Union Association and Northwest Credit Union Association traveled to Washington, D.C., for Capitol Hill visits June 8 and 9.

Following meetings in 27 congressional offices, Rep. Joe Neguse’s, D-Colo., staff told the Association he has signed on to co-sponsor the Credit union Board Modernization Act (H.R. 6889).

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz. introduced a Senate version of the legislation days earlier. The bills would reduce the number of required board meetings each year.

Advocates asked representatives to support this legislation and messaged priorities such as expanding financial access for underserved communities, extending loan maturities, data privacy, and more.

NCUA Chairman Todd Harper also welcomed visitors for a meeting the day after his confirmation by the Senate to a full term on the board. Attendees also met with Vice Chairman Kyle Hauptman, while board member Rodney Hood came to Colorado for a meeting with the Association team and credit union advocates June 13.

Priorities discussed during all three meetings included fintech opportunities for credit unions, modernization of the Central Liquidity Facility, and other topics.

Additional information on the visits can be found here.
