The importance of cybersecurity continues to grow as the world becomes more intertwined with technology.

What’s going on in the cybersecurity landscape? What types of fraud are affecting credit unions? How can they mitigate risks?

Security leaders addressed those questions at the 2023 CUNA Cybersecurity Conference with NASCUS in New Orleans.

Highlights from the conference:

  • A panel of credit union security leaders examined how, amid a worldwide shortage of 3.4 million cybersecurity workers, the industry can close the cybersecurity talent gap.
  • BECU Senior Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer Sean Murphy described the five qualities of top cybersecurity staff.
  • CliftonLarsonAllen Principal Randy Romes outlined the importance of being prepared—physically and mentally—in cybersecurity.
  • John Moeller, principal-cybersecurity at CliftonLarsonAllen, said cybercriminals are turning to targeted business email compromise (BEC) attacks, which focus on stealing credentials.
  • REV Federal Credit Union Fraud Specialist Jessica Cartrette described how fraud and cybersecurity functions are better when they work together, and what the collaboration looks like.

Audio-only interviews:

  • Protocol’s Giles Witherspoon-Boyd explained the perils of “pig slaughtering,” a crime where perpetrators prey on people by forming relationships with them online and then bilking them out of their savings.
  • Carmine Cicalese, founder and president at Cyber CIC, went under the hood of the changing nature of risk and the seven types of risk NCUA expects credit unions to manage.
